As a teacher, the BC Professional Standards guides and advances the work of educators. The standards communicate the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that define educators' work. They also communicate the responsibility and the complex nature of educators' work.
I will value the success of all students and act in their best interests.
As a teacher, you are placed in a position of power and trust. You are also responsible for the physical and emotional safety of students, and the diversity and value they provide in your classroom.
I will act ethically and maintain integrity, credibility and reputation of the teaching profession.
Educators are role models, both in on duty and off duty (outside of school). I will recognize that what I do inside and outside of school represents the profession as a whole.
I will understand and apply the knowledge of student growth and development.
As a teacher, I will recognize how a student develops as learners and social beings. I will recognize the differences and needs of each individual student.
I will value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families and communities
As a teacher, I recognize the importance of a respecting, understanding and encouraging families (of all shapes and forms) when involved in a student’s learning and development.
I will demonstrate effective planning, instruction, assessment/reporting practices as well as a broad knowledge based and understanding of the areas I teach.
I will have, and continue to develop, the knowledge and skills to facilitate learning for students.
I will contribute to the profession, engage in professional learning, and respect and value the history of the Indigenous people of Canada.
As an educator, I will model to my students constant learning and a love of learning. I will respect and value Indigenous knowledge working and contributing towards truth, reconciliation and healing.
