The concept of JUMP Math methods it to help students to overcome math anxiety and to build their confidence and resilience through concepts that build upon one another. It goes beyond memorizing concepts, and helps students to understand the why of what they are learning. It provides just enough information for students to work, but not more that could become overwhelming to some learners. As it builds upon already learned skills, students are able to enhance their knowledge and possibly go over concepts that they may have missed before (ie. problem-solving, noticing patterns, making estimations and predictions).
Through research from the Vancouver School District, they found that it is always possible to make a step easier, and that there is flexibility in the process of learning math (they power of YET). For many students, pacing of other math curriculums was too fast (or too slow), but JUMP math allowed for students to be differentiated in their learning. It was also building more of an awareness of emotional intelligence in the program—weaving new positive math and self connections. The program was also scaffolded how many teachers would already be teaching a math concept. |
