What are some characteristics of Japanese Math Lessons? How do their students succeed when learning? Japanese mathematics lessons include a significant amount of problem solving. This is called "structured problem solving" (Takahashi, A., 2006) designed to create interest in mathematics and stimulate creative mathematical activity through students' collaborative work. After working, they bring the various approaches and solutions to classroom discussion, this is where they can compare individual approaches and solutions as a group.
This means that students are learning multiple approaches to solving one problem.
